Welcome back to our September Marketplace series. Last week, we explored how to anchor your faith in a secular office without crossing HR boundaries. Today, we are moving from theory to tangible execution. If the future of the Church isn’t addition, but multiplication, then our mission fields cannot be confined to Sunday morning worship centers. They must extend directly into the boardroom, the breakroom, and the open-plan office.
The most explosive frontier for disciple-making movements today is not overseas; it is sitting right across from you at your desk on a Tuesday afternoon.
When we examine the ministry model of Jesus in the Gospels, we notice something striking: He met people in their everyday routines: by the lake, at the tax collector’s booth, along dusty roads, and at dinner tables. As we note in The Real Jesus: Volume 2, Jesus did not wait for seekers to walk into a synagogue. He went where the people were, engaging them with reproducible truth that sparked immediate obedience and transformation.
Yet, for decades, many churches have operated under an inward-focused maintenance model: what we often call the "four walls trap." We spend billions of dollars annually maintaining programs for the already-convinced while millions of professionals spend forty hours a week in secular workplaces drowning in spiritual isolation. To bridge this gap, we must embrace a strategic shift: moving from gathering crowds on weekends to sending disciple-makers into the marketplace every single weekday.
Exploring the Marketplace: Why the Lunch Break is Your Ultimate Mission Field
Every great movement begins with a low-barrier, highly reproducible entry point. In our five-lane ministry pathway: Explore, Multiply, Strengthen, Partner, Integrate: the journey always starts with exploration and simple connection. At work, your exploration phase is built around genuine relationships and natural rhythms.
Your lunch break is roughly thirty to forty-five minutes long. In a corporate environment, those minutes are fiercely guarded for personal decompression. What if, instead of scrolling through newsfeeds or staring at spreadsheets, you used that exact window to spark a spiritual awakening?
A Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is designed precisely for this context. It is not a heavy theological lecture where you stand as the expert. It is an interactive, Scripture-driven conversation where colleagues encounter the living Word of God together, ask simple questions, and put what they learn into immediate practice.
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." : Matthew 28:19–20 (NIV)

✔ Pray and Prepare Spiritually: Begin by asking God to reveal your "Person of Peace": a colleague who is open, inquisitive, and ready for spiritual depth (Luke 10:5–6). Commit your workplace to prayer daily.
✔ Choose a Consistent Time and Place: Pick a predictable weekly slot, such as Wednesdays from 12:15 PM to 12:50 PM. Secure a quiet conference room, an empty break space, a nearby coffee shop, or a secure video call link for hybrid teams.
✔ Communicate with Grace and Transparency: Frame the group as a voluntary, open-discussion reading circle centered on life and faith. Ensure your colleagues know there is zero pressure, zero judgment, and no corporate coercion.
✔ Start Small: Do not wait for ten people. If one or two colleagues join you, you have a movement. Jesus started with twelve ordinary people; your marketplace team can start with two.
The 30-Minute DBS Flow: Scripture-Centered, Not Teacher-Centered
The beauty of a Discovery Bible Study lies in its simplicity. Because the format uses the exact same repeatable questions every single week, anyone in the group can eventually facilitate a session. This reproducibility is the engine of exponential multiplication.
A successful 35-minute lunch-break session follows a seamless three-part rhythm:
1. Connect (5–7 minutes)
- Gratitude: What are you thankful for this week?
- Real-life Stresses: What is one challenge or pressure you are facing right now, and how can we support you?
- Accountability (for ongoing groups): Did you follow through on your "I will" statement from our last session?
2. Look Up: Read and Discover (15–20 minutes)
Choose short, narrative-driven passages from the Gospels: such as Jesus calming the storm (Mark 4:35–41) or Zacchaeus encountering grace (Luke 19:1–10).
- Have someone read the passage aloud from the NIV Bible.
- Have another person retell the story in their own words.
- Ask three core discovery questions:
- What stands out to you in this passage?
- What does this passage reveal about God, Jesus, or His heart?
- What does this passage reveal about humanity and daily life?
3. Look Ahead: Obey and Share (5–8 minutes)
- Personal Application: According to this text, what do I need to change in my daily routine?
- The "I will" Statement: Each participant writes down one concrete, actionable step of obedience for the week (e.g., “I will apologize to my team member for losing my patience on Thursday,” or “I will forgive a lingering grudge.”).
- Multiplying the Story: Ask, "Who in your life: a family member, neighbor, or coworker: needs to hear this story this week?"
- Closing Prayer: Pray briefly for each person’s practical step of obedience and for the people they intend to share with.

- Be an Exceptional Employee: Your credibility in the marketplace flows from your work ethic. Meet your deadlines, serve your team with humility, and bring a spirit of excellence to every task.
- Respect Corporate Boundaries: Always conduct your study during designated break times or lunch hours. Never misuse company equipment or force participation. Voluntary engagement builds trust.
- Avoid Theological Debates: A DBS is not a seminar for winning theological arguments. Keep the focus entirely on what the text says and how it transforms our hearts and actions.
- Cultivate a Family Atmosphere: Treat your colleagues with deep familial respect. Listen carefully to their burdens, celebrate their career milestones, and love them unconditionally.
From the Office to the Open Multiplication Pipeline
When a lunch-break Discovery Bible Study takes root, something extraordinary happens. Colleagues who once viewed faith as a private Sunday-morning ritual begin to experience the living power of Jesus in their everyday work lives. Skeptics become seekers; seekers become disciples; and disciples become senders.
This is where marketplace ministry feeds directly back into the broader church multiplication pipeline. As these groups multiply, they form organic house churches, infuse local congregations with fresh missionary zeal, and fulfill the Great Commission right where life happens.
The transition from maintenance to mission begins the moment you open your Bible across an office table and ask your coworker, "What stands out to you?"
