How to Spark a Disciple-Making Movement on Campus: A Guide for High School and College Ministry

By Dr. Adam Grill, Founder of Family Network

The landscape of student ministry has reached a critical intersection.

In one direction, we see sobering data: nearly four in ten young adults never attend religious services, and over 34% of Gen Z identify as religiously unaffiliated. In the other direction, we see an unprecedented spiritual hunger: with 62% of this same generation identifying as "spiritual" and a rising number reporting a renewed interest in the person of Jesus.

The crisis we face is not a lack of interest in God; it is a profound disconnection from traditional, institutional church structures.

For the youth pastor, campus minister, or parent of a college student, the question is no longer how to get students into our buildings. The question is how to get the movement of the Gospel into their world.

The future of the Church isn’t addition. It’s multiplication.

To reach a generation that is institutionally cautious but spiritually curious, we must move away from the "program-centric" model of ministry and toward a true disciple-making movement (DMM).

From Gathering Crowds to Sending Disciple-Makers

Traditional student ministry often measures success by the "gather": how many students showed up for the pizza, the band, or the high-energy sermon? While these have their place, they often create a culture of consumption rather than a culture of mission.

At Family Network, we help leaders shift their focus through a proven three-stage pathway: Explore, Multiply, and Strengthen.

  • Explore: Moving from inspiration to a vision for what’s possible.
  • Multiply: Building a core team of disciple-makers using simple, reproducible tools.
  • Strengthen: Implementing systems that sustain growth without losing the mission.

The goal is not to build a bigger youth room; it is to catalyze an exponential movement where students are empowered to make disciples who make disciples.

Step 1: Identifying the Person of Peace

Every campus movement begins with a strategic search for the "Person of Peace."

As outlined in The Real Jesus | Disciple-making Series | Book 1, Jesus sent His disciples out to find people who were open, hungry, and influential in their own social circles (Luke 10). On a high school or college campus, this is the student who is spiritually curious and has the "relational keys" to their dorm, their sports team, or their friend group.

We are looking for the person who:
✔ Is open to spiritual conversation.
✔ Has a heart for their peers.
✔ Is willing to open their door (or their table) to others.

When you find the Person of Peace, you don't just disciple them; you disciple their entire "oikos": their household or community.

Step 2: The Engine of the Movement: Discovery Bible Study (DBS)

Once a Person of Peace is identified, the primary tool for engagement is the Discovery Bible Study (DBS).

Gen Z values authenticity and discovery over lecture-style teaching. A DBS is a simple, repeatable process that allows the Holy Spirit to be the primary teacher. It removes the pressure from the leader to have all the answers and places the authority back on the Word of God.

A typical DBS on campus follows a simple rhythm:

  1. Connection: What are you thankful for this week? What is a challenge you’re facing?
  2. The Text: Read a short passage from the NIV (e.g., the parables of Jesus).
  3. Discovery: What does this say about God? What does this say about people?
  4. Obedience: If this is true, how will I live differently this week?
  5. Sharing: Who else needs to hear this story?

This model is inherently reproducible. A freshman who has participated in three DBS sessions can go back to their dorm and start their own with their roommates. This is how we move from addition to multiplication.

Step 3: Scaling with the M.A.W.L. Framework

To ensure the movement doesn’t stall with the first group of students, we utilize the M.A.W.L. framework. This is the strategic alignment of leadership development that moves a student from a learner to a leader of a movement.

  • Model: You lead the DBS while the students watch.
  • Assist: You let the student lead portions of the meeting while you support them.
  • Watch: The student leads the entire group while you observe and coach from the sidelines.
  • Leave: You move on to start a new group, but remain available for coaching as the student now repeats the process with others.

This framework shifts the role of the campus minister from a "performer" to a "coach." It prioritizes the mobilization of the students themselves.

Rooted in the Real Jesus

We cannot lead students where we have not gone ourselves. Any movement that lacks a deep, personal commitment to the person of Jesus will eventually become just another program.

In The Real Jesus | Disciple-making Series | Book 2, we explore the necessity of intentional relationships and life-on-life teaching. Students are not looking for a polished presentation; they are looking for a community that reflects the actual life of Jesus: candid, genuine, and transformative.

By grounding our campus strategies in the 50 Commands of Christ, we ensure that our movements are built on obedience and love, not just activity.

Start the Conversation

The Great Commission was never meant to be a suggestion for a few professional clergy; it is a mandate for every follower of Christ. The students on your campus are not the "future" of the church: they are the church now, and they are ready to be mobilized.

Family Network is here to come alongside you. Whether you are looking for comprehensive ministry resources or seeking to join our next disciple-making seminar, we are committed to helping you shift from maintenance to mission.

Assess your culture: Are you building a program or a movement?
Equip your core: Train your student leaders in the DBS model.
Multiply your impact: Use the M.A.W.L. framework to empower the next generation.

The "Real Jesus" model is simple, but it is not easy. It requires a shift in our metrics and our hearts. But for the sake of a generation waiting to be reached, it is a shift we must make.

"Gen Z isn't looking for a better church program: they're looking for a movement they can join. The future of campus ministry isn't gathering a crowd; it's empowering students to find a 'Person of Peace' and start a Discovery Bible Study in their own dorm.
