We have traded life-on-life transformation for high-production events. We have prioritized gathering a crowd over sending a movement. But the data doesn’t lie. While the West remains largely stagnant, we have seen a global shift. In the 1990s, there were only six trackable disciple-making movements (DMM) worldwide. By 2025, that number has skyrocketed to 1,965.
The common denominator in these movements? They aren't relying on massive budgets or complex strategies. They are returning to the power and simplicity of the Jesus model.
The Complexity Trap: Why Programs Aren't the Answer
In our quest to reach more people, we have inadvertently made the process of following Jesus more complicated. We believe that if we just have the right lighting, the right social media strategy, and the most polished children’s ministry, growth will follow.
But Jesus didn't build a program. He built a people.
Modern ministry often treats discipleship like an assembly line: if a person attends a series of classes and checks off a list of experiences, they are "discipled." When we rely solely on programs, we create spectators. When we follow the Jesus model, we catalyze disciple-makers.

The "Master Plan": How Jesus Actually Made Disciples
The beauty of Jesus’ approach is that it is infinitely reproducible. In the New International Version (NIV), Matthew 28:19-20 gives us the clear mandate: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
Note the verb: teaching them to obey.
This isn't just about knowledge acquisition; it’s about strategic alignment with the heart of God. Jesus spent approximately 26,280 hours over three years with a small group of people. He was focused on the few to reach the many. He knew that if he could deeply form twelve people, those twelve would eventually change the world.
